Models of Periodontal Pathogenesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Chronic adult periodontitis is a multifactorial disease. Early histopathological observations described linear model of pathogenesis in periodontal disease. After that the bacterial activation of immuno inflammatory mechanisms, environmental and genetic factors modified the clinical phenotype of periodontal disease which led to the formulation of non-linear conceptual models. However, these models did not capture the dynamic nature of the biochemical processes. With emerging genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data and systems biology tools for interpreting data, a multilevel hierarchial model and biological systems model has been proposed to describe the basic elements of a new model of pathogenesis. It is hoped that improved conceptual models of pathogenesis will assist in focusing new research and speed the translation of new data into practical applications.

Contribution of Animal Models in Periodontal Research
Aim The aim of this review is to define the most pertinent animal models for periodontal research. Background In periodontal research, animal studies are complementary to in vitro experiments prior to testing new treatments. Animal models and cell cultures have contributed new knowledge in biological sciences, including periodontology. Although cultured cells can be used to study physiological ...

Non-human primates have been extensively used in periodontal research to investigate the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, Rats and hamsters are best suited for caries and calculus research. Ferrets may be a promising new model for studying periodontal disease and calculus formation. Beagle dogs are best suited for periodontal disease models than for caries or calculus formation. The purpose...

متن کاملAnimal Models for Periodontal Disease
Animal models and cell cultures have contributed new knowledge in biological sciences, including periodontology. Although cultured cells can be used to study physiological processes that occur during the pathogenesis of periodontitis, the complex host response fundamentally responsible for this disease cannot be reproduced in vitro. Among the animal kingdom, rodents, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and no...
متن کاملThe role of cytomegalovirus infection in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
The main characteristic ofperiodontal disease is chronic inflammation that leads to progressive destruction of the connective tissues and bone with subsequent tooth mobility and finally tooth loss. Traditionally, the pathogenesis of periodontitis was based on the infection caused by bacteria that colonize tooth surface and gingival sulcus. Accumulated evidence show that host response factors su...
